In May, the reservoir had fallen to around 19%, raising concerns about maintaining supplies through the summer.
The situation has now changed dramatically. With substantial rainfall in the dam’s catchment area, the reservoir has recovered to around 98% of its capacity, creating much-needed confidence about the city’s water availability.
Water Cuts Withdrawn
The improvement in storage has allowed the civic administration to withdraw the restrictions imposed during the summer. The development is particularly significant for households, housing societies, commercial establishments and businesses that had been managing reduced or interrupted water supply.
The turnaround also demonstrates the importance of Navi Mumbai’s monsoon system. In 2024, for example, Morbe Dam had crossed 90% storage by early August after receiving more than 2,800 mm of cumulative rainfall, prompting the cancellation of water cuts.
