A Station Built for the Future

As Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) nears completion, its connectivity story is taking a major leap forward with the development of Targhar suburban railway station. Located just across a road from the airport premises, Targhar is set to become the closest rail access point to the new airport, redefining passenger mobility in the region.

Built at an estimated cost of ₹112 crore, the station is in its final phase of construction and is expected to open alongside the airport.

Inspired Design Meets Functionality

The standout feature of Targhar station is its wave-inspired architecture, symbolizing the nearby creek. The roof’s undulating mullions create a 3D ripple effect, making the station both functional and visually striking.

Covering 10,600 sq. m, the station is designed to accommodate high passenger volumes and offers modern commuter conveniences.

Functional Zones at Targhar

According to Mid-Day’s report, the station is divided into four distinct zones to ensure smooth passenger movement:

  • Core Area: Passenger services including ticketing, waiting zones, and information kiosks.

  • Transition Area: Connecting bridges, escalators, and circulation spaces.

  • Peripheral Area: Platforms, tracks, and open access spaces.

  • Administrative Area: Operations, staff facilities, and technical rooms.

The layout ensures that Targhar can handle both suburban rail passengers and airport-bound commuters efficiently.

Direct Airport Integration

Plans include a dedicated shuttle service from Targhar to NMIA, allowing passengers to travel from train to terminal seamlessly. This integration reduces dependence on road traffic, making it a vital part of NMIA’s multimodal transport ecosystem.

Retail outlets and parking zones are also being incorporated, ensuring Targhar doubles as both a transit hub and a commercial point.

Regional Significance

Targhar station is not just about convenience — it represents a strategic shift in how airports in India are integrated with urban transit. Unlike Mumbai’s current airport, where railway connectivity is limited, NMIA’s design ensures that rail travel becomes a viable option for flyers from Day One.

This development is also expected to boost real estate growth in Ulwe, Panvel, and surrounding nodes, as improved accessibility enhances the region’s investment appeal.

With its striking design and direct integration with Navi Mumbai International Airport, Targhar station is more than a railway stop — it is a gateway to India’s aviation future. As NMIA prepares for operations, Targhar will stand as the first touchpoint for thousands of passengers, offering a glimpse of the seamless connectivity that defines the airport’s vision.
