Mumbai Braces for More Rain as Monsoon Intensifies

Mumbai's monsoon season has taken a more active turn, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for July 24 after the city remained under an orange alert for three consecutive days.

The weather department forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places, while the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region continued to experience intense monsoon activity. The forecast also raised concerns over gusty winds, with speeds of up to 60–70 kmph expected in some areas.

While Mumbai itself received moderate rainfall compared with some neighbouring regions, the latest spell has significantly improved water storage levels in the reservoirs that supply the city.

Modak Sagar Becomes the Fourth Lake to Overflow

The combined live storage in the seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai rose to around 70% of capacity, increasing by nearly eight percentage points in just one day.

Modak Sagar became the fourth lake to overflow during the 2026 monsoon after reaching its full supply level at around 2 am on Thursday. The lake is an important component of Mumbai's water supply system and contributes approximately 440 million litres per day (MLD) to the city.

The seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai include:

• Middle Vaitarna

• Vihar

• Tulsi

• Tansa

Together, these reservoirs provide Mumbai with approximately 4,100 MLD of water every day, while the combined storage required to meet the city's annual water needs is around 14.47 lakh million litres.

The rainfall pattern across the MMR was uneven, with several areas recording significantly heavier showers than Mumbai.

During the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, Santacruz recorded 63.6 mm of rainfall, while Colaba received 22.2 mm. Thane recorded 99.32 mm, while Navi Mumbai received 56.87 mm.

The heavy rainfall also disrupted connectivity in parts of the region. In Kalyan, rising water levels in the Kalu River submerged the Runde Bridge on the Titwala-Falegaon road, resulting in its closure to vehicular traffic. Another bridge in the area was also rendered impassable due to the downpour.
