Mumbai’s water security has received a major boost this monsoon, with the combined usable water stock in the seven lakes supplying the city reaching 89.54% as of August 4. The latest figures show that most of the major reservoirs are now either full or close to capacity, reflecting strong monsoon inflows across the catchment areas.


The seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai are Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna. Official BMC-linked water data is updated daily during the monsoon season.

Combined Stock Stands at 89.54%

The latest lake-wise figures are:

Four Lakes Have Reached Full Capacity

The strongest feature of the latest update is that Vihar, Tulsi and Modak Sagar remain at 100% usable stock, while Tansa is also almost completely full at 99.14%.


The city's reservoir position has improved substantially through the monsoon. Earlier in July, Mumbai’s combined stock was around 88%, with continued rainfall pushing storage higher.

Bhatsa and Vaitarna Reservoirs Still Have Room

While several lakes are full, the larger reservoirs still have additional storage capacity.

Middle Vaitarna is at 91.05%, while Bhatsa stands at 87.64% and Upper Vaitarna at 80.53%.


Bhatsa is particularly important to Mumbai’s water system because it is the largest of the seven reservoirs and accounts for a substantial share of the city’s water supply.

Reservoir Levels Reflect Strong Catchment Inflows

The current storage position represents a significant improvement compared with the beginning of the monsoon season. Mumbai’s seven lakes had reached only 41.36% combined capacity on July 8, before sustained rainfall dramatically increased inflows.


With the overall stock now close to 90%, Mumbai enters the later part of the monsoon with a considerably stronger water reserve.
