The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set to witness another major infrastructure upgrade as authorities have approved the extension of Mumbai Metro Line 12 through a new corridor called Metro Line 12A along the busy Kalyan–Shilphata Road. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Kalyan, Dombivli, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, easing congestion on one of the region’s most heavily used road corridors.
A Major Infrastructure Boost for the MMR
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has cleared the Metro Line 12A project with an estimated cost of about ₹8,414 crore. The corridor will run parallel to the Kalyan–Shilphata Road, providing a modern rapid transit option for commuters travelling between rapidly developing suburbs in the region.
The proposed extension will be approximately 18–20 kilometres long and include around 12 elevated stations, connecting key areas such as Kalyan Phata, Dahisar Mori, and other growing residential and industrial zones before linking to the existing metro network near Taloja.
Improving Connectivity Across Key Growth Corridors
Metro Line 12 already connects Kalyan–Dombivli to Taloja in Navi Mumbai, forming an important east-west transit link in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The new 12A extension will further strengthen this network, improving accessibility between the suburbs and supporting future infrastructure integration with other metro corridors.
Once completed, the project will help:
Reduce heavy traffic congestion on Kalyan–Shilphata Road
Improve connectivity between Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan-Dombivli
Provide faster and more reliable public transport for thousands of daily commuters
Support urban development and real estate growth along the corridor
Experts believe the project will play a crucial role in improving regional mobility and strengthening economic activity in the rapidly expanding eastern suburbs of Mumbai.

Areas such as Kalyan, Dombivli, and Taloja are witnessing significant residential and industrial development. With rising population and increasing travel demand, the Metro Line 12A extension is expected to become a key transportation backbone connecting these emerging hubs to the wider Mumbai metropolitan network.
Infrastructure experts say such metro expansions will not only reduce travel time but also boost property values and encourage planned urban development along transit corridors.
A Step Toward a Stronger Metro Network
Mumbai is rapidly expanding its metro network to improve mobility across the metropolitan region. Projects like Metro Line 12A reflect the government’s broader strategy to create a seamless, integrated public transport system that supports sustainable urban growth and reduces dependence on road traffic.
