Navi Mumbai is gearing up for a major infrastructure shift. Starting November 20, 2025, the Navi Mumbai traffic police will implement a one-year traffic diversion to facilitate the construction of CIDCO’s ambitious Kharghar–Turbhe Link Road (KTLR) tunnel project. The Times of India
What the Project Is About ( One-Year Traffic Diversion Begins )
The Kharghar–Turbhe Link Road, estimated at ₹2,100 crore, includes a 1.763 km tunnel through the Kharghar hills, plus elevated viaducts and associated infrastructure. The Times of India+1
Once complete, the link road will drastically cut travel time. Journeys that currently take 40 minutes between Turbhe and Kharghar could be reduced to just 10 minutes. https://www.oneindia.com/+1
The road is designed to relieve load on the Sion–Panvel Highway by offering a faster east-west corridor within Navi Mumbai. Hindustan Times+1
According to the project plan, there will be a 1.8 km twin tunnel segment and a 3.4 km elevated viaduct. Hindustan Times
Additional infrastructure: a 1.5-km elevated road will link Central Park, Kharghar to the jail in Taloja, and a subway will connect Central Park to the proposed International Corporate Park. https://www.oneindia.com/+1
Impact of the Traffic Diversion
The diversion will be in force until November 16, 2026, to allow for construction without major hindrance to the works. The Times of India
During this period, motorists must adjust their routes. The change may initially lead to short-term congestion, especially for commuters used to the existing Sion–Panvel stretch. Lokmat Times+1
Only emergency and essential services (like ambulances, police, fire services) will have restricted access on the diverted stretch during the construction phases. Lokmat Times
Local authorities are urging commuters to cooperate and plan alternative routes ahead of the diversion, to minimize disruption. Lokmat Times
Why This Project Is Important
Improved Connectivity: The KTLR will significantly enhance east-west connectivity in Navi Mumbai, connecting Turbhe, Kharghar, and other key nodes more seamlessly. Hindustan Times
Time Savings: By cutting down travel time by up to 30 minutes, this link road could change daily commuting patterns, easing pressure on congested highways. https://www.oneindia.com/+1
Economic Value: The link road supports CIDCO’s broader development vision in the region, including corporate parks and residential expansion. Newsband
Long-Term Infrastructure Boost: While the diversion may inconvenience drivers for a year, the payoff is a robust, modern transport link that could reduce traffic load permanently. ( One-Year Traffic Diversion Begins )
Bottom Line:
CIDCO’s Kharghar–Turbhe Link Road is a mega-infrastructure project that demands short-term pain for long-term gain. With the one-year traffic diversion beginning soon, Navi Mumbai residents should brace for some disruption. But once the tunnel and elevated roads are complete, the region stands to gain substantially in commuting efficiency, connectivity, and development.
