The Leadership Journey of Tata
1. Jamsetji Tata | 1868–1904
The founder of the Tata Group, Jamsetji Tata established the foundation for an industrial India. His vision extended beyond business, with ambitions for steel, education, hydroelectric power and hospitality. His legacy included the creation of institutions that would influence India for generations.
2. Sir Dorabji Tata | 1904–1932
Jamsetji’s elder son carried forward his father’s vision and played a crucial role in establishing Tata Steel in 1907. Under his leadership, the group expanded its industrial footprint and strengthened its commitment to nation-building.
3. Sir Nowroji Saklatvala | 1932–1938
Saklatvala became the third chairman and helped guide the group during a period of significant economic and global uncertainty.
4. J.R.D. Tata | 1938–1991
One of India’s most influential business leaders, J.R.D. Tata led the group for more than five decades. During his tenure, Tata expanded into chemicals, engineering, automobiles, technology and other sectors. The group grew from 14 enterprises to 95 by the time he stepped down.
5. Ratan Tata | 1991–2012 From Jamsetji Tata to N Chandrasekaran Every Tata chairman since 1868
Ratan Tata took charge during India’s economic liberalisation and transformed the group into a more globally competitive enterprise. His tenure saw landmark acquisitions including Tetley, Corus and Jaguar Land Rover, giving Tata a powerful international presence.
6. Cyrus Mistry | 2012–2016
Cyrus Mistry succeeded Ratan Tata and became chairman during a period of strategic restructuring. His tenure, however, ended in 2016 following a major leadership dispute.
7. Ratan Tata – Interim Chairman | 2016–2017
Following Mistry’s removal, Ratan Tata briefly returned as interim chairman while the group searched for permanent leadership.
8. N. Chandrasekaran | 2017–2027
N. Chandrasekaran became Tata Sons chairman in February 2017, becoming the first non-Parsi professional to lead the group. Previously the CEO and MD of TCS, he has overseen Tata’s expansion in areas including aviation, electronics, digital businesses and semiconductors.
