India is set to undertake one of the largest administrative exercises in the world as more than 3 million officials begin counting the country’s population in a nationwide census starting April 2026. The massive operation, reported by Reuters, will cover over 1.4 billion people, reaffirming India’s position as the world’s most populous nation.

A Historic and Delayed Exercise

The census, which is conducted once every 10 years, was originally scheduled for 2021 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges.

Now rescheduled, the exercise will take place in two major phases:

  • House listing phase (2026): Collecting data on housing conditions

  • Population enumeration phase (2027): Recording detailed information about individuals

Officials will visit every household across the country, making it one of the most extensive data collection efforts globally.

First-Ever Digital Census

For the first time, India will conduct a digital census, allowing citizens to self-register online before physical verification. Enumerators will use mobile applications and digital tools, marking a major shift from traditional paper-based methods.

This digital transformation is expected to improve accuracy, speed, and efficiency in data collection.

Inclusion of Caste Data

A significant feature of this census is the collection of caste data, which has not been fully recorded in decades. The inclusion is expected to play a key role in shaping government policies, welfare schemes, and reservation systems.

However, it also remains a sensitive topic in India’s socio-political landscape.
