Pune’s metro expansion has taken a notable turn as the Pimpri–Nigdi metro extension project cost has increased to ₹960.18 crore following the approval of a new station at Tilak Chowk. The development, highlighted by Pune Mirror, reflects growing efforts to improve last-mile connectivity in one of the city’s fastest-developing corridors.
The Pimpri–Nigdi extension is a crucial part of Pune Metro’s ongoing expansion, aimed at enhancing connectivity across the Pimpri-Chinchwad region, a key industrial and residential hub. The addition of the Tilak Chowk station comes in response to public demand, ensuring better access for residents and businesses in the Nigdi area.
Project Scope and Cost Impact
The metro extension spans approximately 4.4 km, connecting PCMC Bhavan to Bhakti Shakti Chowk (Nigdi). Initially planned with three stations, the inclusion of the fourth station at Tilak Chowk has increased the overall cost of the project.
The revised project cost now stands at ₹960.18 crore, with a significant financial contribution from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Reports indicate that the civic body’s share has increased due to the additional infrastructure requirements linked to the new station.
Progress and Development
Construction work on the corridor is progressing steadily, with over 50% of the work already completed, including pillar installation and viaduct construction. Authorities are aiming to complete the project within the next phase of Pune Metro expansion, improving daily commute efficiency.
Once operational, the extension is expected to significantly reduce travel time and traffic congestion along the busy Mumbai–Pune highway stretch.
Boost for Connectivity and Real Estate
The metro corridor will improve connectivity across key locations such as Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi, making commuting faster and more reliable.
