Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Flight Shift Deferred Until March 2027

International Flight Transfers to NMIA Postponed
The planned partial shifting of international flights from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been deferred until the summer flight schedule beginning in March 2027.
The decision follows discussions between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) and airline representatives after airlines raised concerns about the proposed transition timeline. The postponement means international flight operations at Mumbai airport will not be disrupted by the proposed transfer during the upcoming winter schedule.
Why Was the Flight Shift Planned?Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Flight Shift Deferred Until March 2027
The proposed transition is linked to the redevelopment of Mumbai airport's ageing Terminal 1 (T1), which primarily handles domestic flights. The redevelopment is expected to begin in January 2027.
Under the earlier proposal, airlines were asked to temporarily shift or discontinue approximately 33% of their international departure services from Mumbai airport. The plan involved relocating 265 of the 770 weekly international departures handled by 46 airlines at Terminal 2 (T2).
The objective was to create additional capacity at T2 for domestic passengers and flights that would be affected by the redevelopment of T1, while using Navi Mumbai International Airport to accommodate part of the displaced operations.
Airlines Raise Concerns Over Implementation
Airlines objected to the proposed timeline, citing concerns about operational readiness, flight scheduling, passenger convenience and the need for detailed transition planning.
Following these concerns, the Ministry of Civil Aviation called for further consultation between the airport operator and airlines. The latest discussions resulted in an agreement that existing international flight slots would not be disturbed during the winter schedule.
Airport representatives have also committed to working with airline network and slot teams to minimise disruption and develop a coordinated plan for the transition. A joint working group is expected to prepare a detailed implementation plan for the redevelopment of Terminal 1.
What Does This Mean for Passengers?
For passengers travelling internationally through Mumbai airport, the postponement provides greater certainty during the winter schedule, which begins on October 25, 2026, and continues until March 2027.
However, the delay does not mean that the proposed transfer has been permanently cancelled. Some international services may still move to Navi Mumbai International Airport under a revised plan during the summer schedule, subject to further discussions and implementation arrangements.
Passengers should continue checking their airline's official communications for any future changes to departure airports, flight timings or terminal information, Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Flight Shift Deferred Until March 2027.
Navi Mumbai Airport's Role in Regional Aviation
The proposed transfer reflects the growing role of NMIA in Mumbai Metropolitan Region's aviation network. As the new airport expands its operations, it is expected to help accommodate additional passenger traffic and provide capacity alongside the existing Mumbai airport.
The redevelopment of Terminal 1 and the planned redistribution of flight operations will require coordination among airport operators, airlines and aviation authorities. A phased approach could help balance infrastructure upgrades with the need to maintain reliable services for passengers.
The next stage will depend on the detailed redevelopment plan and consultations between the airport operator and airlines ahead of the summer schedule in March 2027.
