Mumbai–Thane Connectivity Set for a Major Transformation

A major infrastructure milestone has brought Mumbai's long-awaited connectivity upgrade one step closer to reality. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant breakthrough in the construction of the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a project that is expected to dramatically improve travel between South Mumbai and Thane.


The six-lane elevated corridor is designed to connect Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar with Anand Nagar in Thane. According to MMRDA, the project could eventually reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to approximately 25–30 minutes, potentially transforming daily commuting across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Major Girder Launcher Installation Completed

59-Metre Sections Installed Above Eastern Express Highway

In the latest construction milestone, MMRDA successfully installed two sections of the main girder launcher above the busy Eastern Express Highway.

Despite the scale and complexity of the operation, the installation was completed in around four hours with detailed planning, traffic coordination and safety measures.


With the main girder launcher now positioned, the project can move into the next phase of construction, involving the installation of 1,632 precast segments to progressively build the elevated viaduct. Each precast segment is expected to weigh approximately 90 metric tonnes.

Six Lanes to Improve Regional Mobility

The proposed corridor will be a six-lane, fully elevated road, providing a crucial east-west connection across several important parts of Mumbai's eastern suburbs.

The alignment is expected to improve connectivity through areas including Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mulund, Airoli, JVLR and Mankhurd, before reaching Anand Nagar in Thane.


The project was approved at an estimated cost of ₹3,314.40 crore. MMRDA's latest project information states that preliminary surveys and test piling have been completed, while geotechnical investigations, utility identification, working piles, piers and pier caps are progressing.

Faster Commutes and Potential Traffic Relief

The Eastern Freeway Extension is expected to provide an alternative high-capacity route for commuters travelling between Thane and Mumbai. By improving east-west connectivity and reducing pressure on existing road networks, the corridor could help make journeys more predictable.

For Navi Mumbai and surrounding regions, the project's integration with the wider MMR road network could also improve regional mobility.
