Third Mumbai to Get Local Train Connectivity as MRVC Begins Railway Expansion Plan

The development of Third Mumbai is entering a new phase, with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) beginning work on a railway expansion plan aimed at providing suburban train connectivity to the region.
As Third Mumbai emerges as a major growth zone around Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Karnala-Sai-Chirner (KSC) urban nodes, stronger public transport connectivity will be critical for its long-term development, Third Mumbai to Get Local Train Connectivity as MRVC Begins Railway Expansion Plan.
Local Trains Planned for Third Mumbai
MRVC is preparing MUTP-4, a long-term railway expansion plan designed around the passenger demand expected over the next two decades. The plan includes studying new railway corridors, expanding existing lines and improving connectivity to the emerging Third Mumbai region.
A feasibility study will specifically examine extending existing suburban railway connectivity towards the NMIA Influence Notified Area (NAINA) and Karnala-Sai-Chirner urban nodes. The final network will be developed in coordination with MRVC, Central Railway, Western Railway and the Maharashtra government.
More Tracks, Stations & Modern Signalling
The proposed plan is not limited to new railway lines. It includes studies for:
New railway corridors and terminals
Additional suburban tracks
Separate tracks for fast and slow local trains
Separation of suburban and long-distance train traffic
Upgradation of around 40 suburban stations
Additional stabling and maintenance facilities
Advanced signalling, including Kavach 5.0
Better passenger access and station safety systems
MRVC will also assess passenger demand for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2047 before preparing detailed project reports, including estimated costs and economic and financial feasibility.
Why This Matters for Third Mumbai
Third Mumbai is being planned as one of the next major growth areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While roads, airports and other infrastructure are expanding rapidly, reliable suburban rail connectivity could become a key driver of its urban development.
Better rail access could make emerging residential, commercial and employment hubs more accessible while reducing dependence on road transport.
The Bigger Picture Third Mumbai to Get Local Train Connectivity as MRVC Begins Railway Expansion Plan
With NMIA, Atal Setu, Third Mumbai and new infrastructure corridors transforming the region, the proposed railway expansion could become an important backbone for the next generation of Mumbai's growth.
Third Mumbai may not just get a new cityscape—it could get its own local train network.
