Pune’s long-awaited Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 is finally nearing passenger operations, bringing potential relief to thousands of IT professionals who travel daily between Hinjewadi and central Pune, Hinjewadi Metro to Start by September-End, 17 Stations Expected to Open.
The 23.23-km corridor is planned to begin services by the end of September 2026, with 17 of its 23 stations expected to open initially. The plan has been expanded from the earlier proposal of starting with 12 stations.
From Hinjewadi to District Court
The metro corridor connects the major Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar, passing through important areas including Wakad, Balewadi and Baner.
The initial 17-station operation is expected to provide a faster public transport option for employees and residents currently dependent on heavily congested roads. The full corridor will eventually have 23 stations.
According to the information shared by Pune Mirror, the service could reduce the current 1.5–2 hour road commute from Hinjewadi to around 45 minutes for passengers travelling on the operational stretch.
Safety Clearances Underway
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) had already cleared the first 12 stations for passenger operations on July 23. Five additional stations are scheduled for safety inspection, after which PMRDA will finalise the operational plan.
Six stations are expected to remain closed initially until pending work and safety clearances are completed. These include Laxmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, RBI and Shivajinagar.
Why It Matters for Pune
Hinjewadi is one of Pune’s major employment and technology hubs, but road congestion has long been a challenge for commuters. The metro is designed to provide an alternative to the busy Hinjewadi–Baner–Shivajinagar road corridor.
The project could also strengthen connectivity for surrounding residential and commercial areas while supporting Pune’s continued urban expansion.
