Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for another major infrastructure expansion, with Central Railway seeking forest clearance for a proposed fourth railway line between Kalyan and Asangaon. The 32.23-km project aims to ease congestion, improve train operations and create additional capacity along one of the busiest railway corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

According to The Times of India, approximately 6.5 hectares of forest land across the Thane and Shahapur forest divisions may be required for the project. Central Railway has submitted an application seeking approval for the proposed diversion.

With thousands of commuters relying on this corridor every day, the expansion could become an important step towards improving suburban connectivity.

Kalyan–Asangaon Fourth Railway Line: Project Details

The proposed fourth railway line carries an estimated cost of ₹1,619.96 crore, which will be shared equally by the Railways and the Maharashtra government.

The new track will largely run parallel to the existing railway corridor, allowing authorities to use the available railway land wherever possible and limit additional land requirements.

The proposed alignment will pass through:

  • Kalyan

  • Shahad

  • Ambivli

  • Titwala

  • Khadavali

  • Vasind

  • Asangaon

Railway yards at Kalyan, Titwala, Khadavali, Vasind and Asangaon are also planned to be connected to the fourth line.

Why Does Central Railway Need Another Track?

Currently, the Kalyan–Asangaon section has two electrified railway tracks, while construction of a third line is underway. Suburban local trains, long-distance passenger services and freight trains share the existing network, creating capacity constraints.

The proposed fourth line is intended to provide additional track capacity and greater operational flexibility. This could help the Railways manage train movements more efficiently, particularly during disruptions and periods of heavy traffic.

However, the project still requires the relevant forest clearance, and its completion timeline will depend on subsequent approvals and construction progress.

What Does This Mean for Property Buyers?

Railway connectivity is an important consideration for people choosing homes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Improved rail infrastructure can make commuting more convenient and increase accessibility to employment centres.

Locations such as Kalyan, Titwala, Shahad and Asangaon could attract attention from homebuyers looking for residential options along the Central Railway corridor.

For real estate investors, infrastructure projects can create opportunities, but future property appreciation is not guaranteed. Buyers should also evaluate local amenities, existing transport access, property prices and the project's actual implementation timeline.

A New Step Towards Better Regional Connectivity

The proposed Kalyan–Asangaon fourth railway line highlights the continuing need to expand Mumbai’s suburban transport infrastructure as residential areas grow beyond the established city limits,Kalyan Asangaon Fourth Railway Line 7 Hectares of Forest Land Proposed for Diversion.

If approved and completed, the additional track could help increase railway capacity and support smoother movement for suburban, long-distance and freight services.

For commuters and property buyers, the next important milestone will be the forest clearance decision and further updates on the project's implementation.
