A major infrastructure milestone is taking shape in coastal Maharashtra that promises to transform travel between Mumbai and Alibaug. The new Karanja–Rewas Bridge, a 2.04 km long, 29.5 m wide four-lane crossing over Dharamtar Creek in Raigad district, is rapidly progressing as part of the SH-4 Rewas–Redi Coastal Highway project.

Once completed, this iconic link will dramatically improve connectivity by slashing current travel time between Mumbai and Alibaug by up to 90 minutes. At present, motorists take about 2–3 hours to cover the route; the new bridge will reduce that to around 60–75 minutes, making weekend getaways and business trips much easier and faster.

Key Features of the Project

  • 📏 Bridge length: 2.04 km over Dharamtar Creek

  • 🚗 Width & lanes: 29.5 meters wide, four lanes

  • 🛣️ Approach roads:• ~5.13 km road on the Karanja side• ~3.08 km road to Rewas (including 1.71 km elevated section)

  • 🚀 Design speed: Up to 80 km/h

  • 🧱 Footpaths: 1.5 m wide pedestrian walkways on both sides

The bridge is being built by Afcons Infrastructure under the supervision of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) as part of its ambitious coastal highway plan. It’s expected to enhance regional mobility and economic activity, benefiting local commuters, tourists, and freight movement alike.
