LPG crisis hit Thane in Maharashtra, over 800 hotels and restaurants face possible shutdown
 Source: Mid-Day

A growing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in Maharashtra has created a major crisis for the hospitality sector, particularly in Thane, where more than 800 hotels and restaurants are at risk of shutting down. The shortage is largely linked to supply disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has affected global energy shipments and fuel availability.

LPG Supply Disruption Hits Local Food Businesses

Hotels and eateries across Thane depend heavily on 19.5-kg commercial LPG cylinders for daily cooking operations. However, restaurant associations say deliveries have slowed significantly in recent days, leaving many establishments with only five to six days of gas stock remaining.

If the supply situation does not improve quickly, many restaurants may be forced to temporarily suspend operations. Industry representatives have warned that thousands of workers employed in the food and hospitality sector could be affected if the crisis continues.

Most Restaurants Depend on LPG Cylinders

According to the Thane City Hotel Association, nearly 70% of hotels and eateries rely entirely on LPG cylinders, as only about 30% have access to piped gas connections. Larger restaurants typically consume up to two cylinders per day, while smaller eateries use one cylinder every couple of days.

This heavy dependence on LPG has made the sector extremely vulnerable to supply disruptions.

Black Marketing Concerns Emerge

With supply tightening, restaurant owners have also raised concerns about black marketing of LPG cylinders. Industry representatives claim that some suppliers are charging ₹400 extra per cylinder due to the shortage, further increasing operating costs for businesses already struggling to stay open.

The LPG shortage is not limited to Thane alone. Reports indicate that restaurants in Mumbai and several other Indian cities are also facing similar disruptions, forcing many establishments to reduce menu items or temporarily close kitchens.

The crisis has been linked to global geopolitical tensions affecting fuel shipments and supply chains across Asia and the Middle East.

Industry Appeals for Government Intervention

Hotel associations have urged government authorities and oil companies to step in immediately and ensure smooth distribution of commercial LPG cylinders. They have requested stricter monitoring to prevent hoarding and black marketing while restoring normal supply levels.

Without quick intevention, experts warn that the ongoing LPG shortage could severely disrupt the food service industry and impact thousands of small businesses and workers in Maharashtra’s hospitality sector.
