The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a crucial step forward for the ongoing Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project by applying for Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the construction of six ramps and allied works at the Shivajinagar Interchange near Gavhan Village in Panvel, Raigad district, Maharashtra. This move sets the stage for improved connectivity and seamless junctions at one of MTHL’s most important intersections. Wikipedia
Shivajinagar serves as a key junction point where the MTHL connects to multiple arterial routes, including future elevated corridors and road networks linking Navi Mumbai International Airport, JNPT and the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Indian Express
About the Proposed Works
The MMRDA’s proposal focuses on constructing:
Six entry and exit ramps at the Shivajinagar Interchange.
Allied infrastructural works, including approach roads and service connections that will enhance traffic flow and integration with existing highways.
These ramps are intended to facilitate smoother traffic dispersal from the MTHL to surrounding road networks, reducing congestion and improving access to Panvel, Raigad and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Because this area falls under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), MMRDA has filed for clearance in accordance with the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011 — a legal requirement for infrastructure projects affecting coastal and mangrove ecosystems. MMRDA
Why CRZ Clearance Matters ( MMRDA Files for CRZ Clearance for Shivajinagar Interchange Ramps at MTHL )
CRZ clearance is essential for coastal projects in India to ensure environmental safeguards. It assesses:
Protection of mangroves and coastal ecology
Impact on tidal zones and marine life
Compliance with environmental laws and sustainable construction practices. MMRDA
Similar projects — including extensions, elevated corridors, and interchanges around the MTHL and Navi Mumbai region — have also navigated CRZ requirements to balance development with ecological protection. Griha Realty
Obtaining CRZ clearance will allow MMRDA to begin detailed design and contractor selection, followed by construction work once all environmental and regulatory approvals are in place.
Transforming Regional Connectivity
The Shivajinagar Interchange ramps are part of a broader effort to transform connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, particularly in eastern Navi Mumbai and Raigad districts. When complete, these ramps will:
🛣 Enable faster movement between the MTHL and Panvel, NH-348 and surrounding corridors.
🚗 Reduce congestion at major traffic junctions near the Navi Mumbai International Airport and JNPT port routes.
📈 Enhance integration with future elevated road networks and logistic corridors. The Indian Express
Infrastructure developments like these are poised to enhance economic activity, reduce travel times and support industrial growth across the region. ( MMRDA Files for CRZ Clearance for Shivajinagar Interchange Ramps at MTHL )
