Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is strengthening its position as an emerging logistics hub, handling 11,853 metric tonnes of cargo between January and September 2026. With international freight accounting for more than half of the total volume, the airport is building its role in connecting businesses across western India with global markets.

According to Businessworld, the cargo performance highlights NMIA’s growing importance in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s aviation and logistics network.

International Freight Drives Cargo Growth

Of the total cargo handled during the first nine months of 2026, 54.6% was international freight, while domestic cargo accounted for the remaining 45.4%, Navi Mumbai International Airport Handles 11853 Tonnes of Cargo as International Freight Leads.

The airport handled approximately 6,477 metric tonnes of international cargo, including imports and exports, alongside 5,376 metric tonnes of domestic freight.

A further milestone was achieved on October 9, when NMIA successfully handled eight dedicated cargo aircraft in a single day. This demonstrated the airport’s growing capacity to manage cargo operations involving multiple international airlines.

Global Airlines Expand Cargo Connectivity

NMIA is attracting cargo operators serving important international trade routes. Airlines and logistics companies, including Cathay Cargo, Silk Way West Airlines and Hong Kong Air Cargo, are contributing to its expanding freight network.

Silk Way West Airlines has introduced Boeing 777 freighter services connecting Baku with Navi Mumbai, while Cathay Cargo is developing scheduled capacity linking the airport with major global trade centres.

These connections can support industries that depend on reliable air freight, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, engineering goods and e-commerce.

Why NMIA Matters for Navi Mumbai’s Development

The airport’s cargo operations extend beyond aviation. Its proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), approximately 14 km away, creates opportunities to integrate air freight with maritime logistics.

Better coordination between airports, ports, warehouses and road networks could support faster cargo movement and improve access to international markets for businesses across the region.

The development may also encourage demand for logistics parks, warehousing facilities and commercial infrastructure around Panvel, Ulwe and other emerging locations. However, the scale of these opportunities will depend on actual business demand, infrastructure development and future cargo growth.

A Growing Logistics Hub for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region

NMIA’s early cargo figures indicate progress towards establishing an additional freight gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Dedicated cargo operations, international airline participation and specialised handling facilities are important foundations for its long-term development.

As operations expand, the airport could strengthen regional trade connectivity and support businesses involved in manufacturing, exports and international distribution.

For Navi Mumbai, the airport’s growth is another infrastructure development to watch as the region continues evolving into a major aviation, logistics and commercial destination.
