Panvel — In a significant step toward improving urban mobility, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved the construction of a new four-lane bridge over the Gadhi River, a long-pending demand aimed at reducing congestion between Panvel, Karanjade, and Vadghar’s CIDCO colonies.
The proposal was cleared following strong recommendations from Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur and Uran MLA Mahesh Baldi, who highlighted the daily traffic bottlenecks faced by thousands of commuters—an issue expected to worsen once the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) becomes operational.
Project Overview & Key Features ( Traffic on Panvel–Karanjade Route )
Project Cost: ₹48.40 crore
Total Length: 240 metres
Total Width: 21.5 metres
Lanes: Four lanes
Connectivity:
Links PMC’s 40-ft road (eastern side)
Connects to CIDCO’s 20-metre-wide road leading to Karanjade (western side)
According to civic officials, the existing bridge frequently witnesses heavy traffic, leading to prolonged jams during peak hours. The new structure is designed to serve as a critical
alternative route, ensuring smooth flow and accommodating future traffic growth.
Approvals & Technical Review
For the project to proceed, PMC will obtain NOCs from:
CIDCO
Water Resources Department
Public Works Department
Additionally, the bridge’s conceptual design will undergo a technical review by IIT Mumbai or VJTI Mumbai, ensuring engineering robustness and safety compliance before ground work begins. ( Traffic on Panvel–Karanjade Route )
A Crucial Link for the Airport Growth Corridor
PMC officials stated that this bridge will play a major role in managing the anticipated surge in traffic once NMIA opens. The Panvel–Karanjade stretch is quickly becoming a strategic mobility route for both residents and airport-bound vehicles.
“This connection will significantly streamline traffic and support future vehicular growth,” said Additional Commissioner Ganesh Shete.
With administrative clearance secured, construction is expected to commence soon.
