The ambitious Thane Coastal Road-1 project has crossed the 40% completion milestone within just 14 months, marking significant progress on a major infrastructure corridor planned to ease congestion and strengthen connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

According to the latest MMRDA update, construction is progressing simultaneously across foundations, piers, pier caps and I-girder erection. As of September 2, 2026, the project has achieved substantial progress across several key components.

Major Construction Progress

The latest figures include:

  • 332 of 426 working piles completed — 77%

  • 277 of 426 piers completed — 65%

  • 460 pier caps cast

  • 501 of 1,632 I-girders erected — around 30%

  • 13 deck-slab spans completed

  • 40% overall project progress

These figures highlight the pace at which the elevated corridor is taking shape, Thane Coastal Road-1 Crosses 40Pct Completion Milestone in 14 Months.

13.45-Km Six-Lane Coastal Corridor

Thane Coastal Road-1 is a 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor connecting Kharegaon Toll Naka with Gaimukh.

The project incorporates advanced construction techniques, including a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land, described by project authorities as the first such application for a greenfield road project in India.

A major portion of the corridor will be elevated, including an 8.11-km elevated section through mangrove areas, along with a 240-metre creek bridge. This design is intended to reduce the impact on the sensitive mangrove ecosystem.

Designed to Decongest Ghodbunder Road

The corridor is being developed as a strategic freight and regional connectivity route. It will improve connectivity between NH-160/Mumbai–Nashik Highway and Gaimukh, while providing an alternative route for traffic heading towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and North India.

A 40–45 metre-wide DP road is also planned to help separate local traffic from longer-distance and inter-city movement on Ghodbunder Road.

Connecting With Thane's Future Infrastructure

At Gaimukh, Thane Coastal Road-1 is planned to connect with the upcoming Gaimukh–Fountain Hotel Tunnel, creating a stronger Thane–Bhayandar connection.

The corridor is also expected to integrate with Thane Coastal Road-2, the Saket–Amane Elevated Corridor and Kasarvadavli–Kharbav Road, creating a wider network for urban mobility and freight movement.

Why It Matters Thane Coastal Road-1 Crosses 40Pct Completion Milestone in 14 Months

Once completed, Thane Coastal Road-1 could become a critical part of the region's next-generation transport network—reducing pressure on Ghodbunder Road, improving freight movement towards major ports and supporting faster connectivity across Thane and the wider MMR.

With 40% already completed in 14 months, the project is steadily moving from plans on paper to a major piece of infrastructure taking shape on the ground.
