Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for another major capacity upgrade as the Kalyan–Badlapur 3rd and 4th railway lines project has achieved 52% physical progress. The project, being executed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3A (MUTP-3A), is designed to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency on one of the busiest sections of the Central Railway network.

A ₹1,510 Crore Push for Better Connectivity

The Kalyan–Badlapur project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹1,510 crore and is targeted for completion by 2028. The plan involves adding two new railway lines alongside the existing tracks, creating additional capacity on the heavily used Kalyan–Karjat corridor.


The additional infrastructure is expected to help improve the separation and management of suburban, long-distance and other rail operations, potentially allowing greater flexibility in train planning and smoother movement across the corridor.

Major Infrastructure Work Already Underway

Significant progress has been made across the project. The LC-1A and MIDC Road Overbridges have been completed and opened to traffic. Work is also progressing on the LC-4C and LC-7 Road Overbridges, while the MIDC pipeline bridge was completed in March 2026 and handed over to MIDC.

Chikhloli Station Development Gains Momentum

Infrastructure development is also progressing at the upcoming Chikhloli railway station. Most of the civil work on the station and service buildings has been completed, with painting and other finishing work remaining.


Construction continues on three foot overbridges, platform roofing, platforms and the approach road, while around 500 metres of RCC platform wall has already been completed.

What Will It Mean for Commuters?

Once completed, the additional railway lines are expected to increase capacity and improve operational flexibility on the Kalyan–Badlapur corridor. This could support better suburban service planning, especially during peak hours, while reducing operational conflicts with long-distance train movements.

At 52% completion, the project has crossed an important milestone—and by 2028, it could bring a significant upgrade to one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban rail corridors.
